Microtubule teardrop patterns

Several strategies for controlling microtubule patterns are developed because of the rigidity determined from the molecular structure and the geometrical structure. In contrast to the patterns in co-operation with motor proteins or associated proteins, microtubules have a huge potential for patterns via their intrinsic flexural rigidity. We discover that a microtubule teardrop pattern emerges v...

How Microtubule Patterns Are Generated

The axonemes of Raphidiophrys converge near the center of the cell in an electron-opaque material, the centroplast. In order to establish whether this material acts not only to nucleate the microtubules which form the axonemes but also to give the axoneme its characteristic pattern, the microtubules were disassembled with low temperature and stages in their reformation were studied. It was show...

Optimizing Teardrop, an MRI sampling trajectory

Teardrop is an efficient sampling trajectory for acquiring Magnetic Resonance (MR) Imaging Data, especially balanced steady state free precession images. In this paper we present two models for optimizing such trajectories. These are the first models to incorporate motion-insensitivity constraints into a non-raster (also called spiral) sampling trajectory. The first model is nonlinear and very ...

Cervical spine spondylodiscitis mimicking teardrop fracture

Pyogenic spondylodiscitis can have nonspecific clinical and imaging presentations. In this report, we describe a case of pyogenic spondylodisicits of cervical spine mimicking teardrop fracture on radiography. Subsequent CT-guided biopsy helped identify the correct diagnosis and the responsible pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus.

Guiding microscale swimmers using teardrop-shaped posts.

The swimming direction of biological or artificial microscale swimmers tends to be randomised over long time-scales by thermal fluctuations. Bacteria use various strategies to bias swimming behaviour and achieve directed motion against a flow, maintain alignment with gravity or travel up a chemical gradient. Herein, we explore a purely geometric means of biasing the motion of artificial nanorod...
